Recording better bass guitar - DI? Preamp? Both?

I've been slowly building up my little studio for a while. Getting some nice results & learning a whole lot too.

Looking to improve my bass guitar recording - currently just going direct into interface (Scarlett 2i2) & using amp sims (Amplitube). Decent DI box seems the obvious solution, something like a BSS AR133.

Also been looking at pre-amps, maybe something with a Neve flavour - would the pre-amp convert a bass signal to balanced and therefore negate the need for a DI? Or is it best to go bass > DI > preamp > interface?

Mic'ing an actual bass amp isn't really an option at the moment before anyone mentions it...

Underrated DI.

Won a shootout with a Zod, due to being more resistant to hum and with nearly as deep low end extension.

Less colorful than the Zod but captures every bit of music put through it.

Best bang for the buck in Neve product line.

I get good bass guitar sounds form using the Hartke VXL Attack Pre-amp DI box. They sell for under $80 now and they get amazing bass tones without micing a cabinet
