Looking to make a summing mixer?

I'm an amateur tinkerer...

What I want to do, is take two TRS feeds, lets say one of an MP3 player, and one from a computer. And I want to combine them into a single TRS output to my personal headphones.

(in-1) + (in-2) = (out)

However, I would like to be able to control the mix of these two inputs on a single dial. So if the dial is turned all the way to the left, it will be 100% from in-1, and 0% from in-2. And if it's turned all the way to the right, it would be 0% and 100% respectively. And of course, all the various mixing levels in between.

I would also want another dial in the system, which simply controls the overall volume.

Is something like this possible, and easy to make?

Yeah, it's probably "very easy". I don't know how to do it though. You can probably just scour the internet and find a schematic of the two required circuits of control; one for the panning (selecting 1 vs 2) and one for overall level.

Why not just purchased an inexpensive mixer and be done with it.

Yes. It’s called a crossfader. Consult Google for design examples.
