Considering a total change in my studio routing : need advice

Hello, I have been mostly playing with hardware, sending each one directly into a mixer (ZED 24 from Allen & Heath) thus never using a computer.

Now that I feel I want to really make tracks and record with ease, I have been thinking about getting a Motu 16A.

I need 10 inputs for each output of my TR 909 and a couple more (2 stereo inputs and few mono) so 16 seemed perfect.

I wonder what's the best routing considering I also have a couple of external compressors.

I have troubles picturing the whole set up. How would you route everything?

If i were in your situation, i would invest in patchbays. You would bring all your gear outputs up into the top jacks, and all your gear inputs into the bottom jacks.

With certain gear you want the top and bottom jacks internally connected when nothing is plugged in. This is called Normalled. When a jack is inserted in the top row, the Normal is broken allowing you to patch whatever that gear output is, to wherever else you want to send it.

There are other configurations for patchbays. It will be an expense (patchbays, cabling) but it is the most flexible setup you can have and allows for a faster and easier workflow. The expense can be somewhat mitigated by learning to build your own cables and snakes, but that's a whole other discussion.

Hope that helps.

Try mapping it out on paper so you can get a big picture.
Then you can go over different scenarios and find the way that works for you.
For example using a text doc:

TR909 1-out >----> 1-in Zed24 1-send >--> 1-in MOTU
TR909 2-out >----> 2-in Zed24 2-send >--> 2-in MOTU

If your good with a drawing program you can use that.
For me a simple text file (mono-spaced font) works.

I have two of these and they have served me well:

you can set this for normalled as mentioned above.

buy one of these and some patch cables and you're good to go.
