[Mixing] Is the Drums Room similar to a Reverb?

Straight to the point:
When mixing should I see the Drums Room as a Reverb? It's not much clear to me what it is/does.

If the answe is yes: why so many people use to compress it like the hell?

I am a bit confused

The drum room mics are the sound of the drums in the room. It really isn't any more complex than that. Compressing them brings up the reverberation/early reflections in the room, and that can sound cool in the right context.
