MWTM: Nick Launay - using phase and reverse phase to make changes in volume or EQ

I saw an ad for mix with the masters with nick launay and he mentions using phase reverse for subtraction and adding to his mix to add level in. Can someone wiser than me explain why he wouldn’t just use an eq?

He mentions the technique at 1:15

Because its an Advertisement and he is trying to sell you on something. That is all it is. Take all that with a grain of salt.

Also, there are many occasions in audio production (recording and mixing) when you can get the same result with 50 different techniques and/or tools. It doesn't matter what you do, it just matters how it sounds in the end.

No one will ever say after listening to a song, "Hey man, he used this phase technique at the 1:51 mark. That totally confused me as an EQ would could have done the same thing."
