Vocal effect on broken social scene stars and sons

I’m trying to figure out how they got the whispery vocal sound on this song. I assume they just used a ton of gain on the pre and compressed the hell out of it. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

The voice and singing is obviously the key. But in addition to that and your ideas there’s perhaps some vocoder with noise as carrier and some nice distortion/saturation.

It really does sound like that's just how he sang it. So, yeah, plenty of gain, plenty of compression, and presumably some scooping out of low-mid frequencies, and some boosting of the 1k and air frequencies.
