A Gain Staging Thread

some years ago I seem to remember a gearslutz article or.. well, it wasnt a thread... it was some kind of article that countless people were/are directed to to get the ultimate, final lowdown on digital gainstaging.

Where or what GS article is that?

Could it be this: The Reason Most ITB mixes don’t Sound as good as Analog mixes (restored)

As I remember the takeaway was “keep levels down when using plugins that emulate analog gear”.

Dial in the right* (wish full) amount of gain at every stage (what the signal is going through).
Don't make it any harder then that.

* Not to soft (close to noisefloor) in analog domain and not to loud (clipping).
Make life easy on controls and sweet spots of gear, plugins.

Put the right amount of gain in and take the right amount of gain out. Its depending on what is being used and how hard you want to drive the audio source through each gain stage. Also depends on analog and digital realms and if you are recording and mixing.

The only right way to gain stage is to not clip and overdrive anything. Other than that, gain away..............................................
