You mean the melody? It’s some kind of synth, perhaps with some flanger. Don’t know what synth, perhaps a DX7???

sounds like an electric guitar to me. its double tracked and panned left and right.

sounds like a classic Strat, on the 2nd or 4th switch, with buckets or Chorus, which was common back then.

Buckets of Chorus.

To add, played by someone with ultra tight spandex and too much hair spray on his hair. It could of affected the sound

Definitely guitar (quite possibly DI'd, but real guitarists would know better) plus heavy chorus. Can't say for sure about the double-tracking, but that's what a chorus does: pushes the sound out wide. The classic Boss chorus, in stereo mode, will hard-pan the unprocessed sound to one side, and the detuned one to the other. This is cranked up quite a bit, so the detuning is more obvious than on more subtle settings. Nile Rodgers has spoken about how often he used the Roland Dimension D chorus on tons of stuff; but I've never heard it sounding quite this obvious - so this may be something like the classic Boss chorus pedal.

That would be a funny look for Nile Rodgers.

But then that sound is anomalous of his typically clean strat tone.

listen to the guitar solo outro at the end of LUKA by Suzanne Vega. at 3.23

Chorus was all the Rage back then.

Are we talking about the same sound here?! I thought the OP meant the melody at 01:00, that’s not a guitar to my ears.

But agree on the chorus rather than flanger. And the spandex.
