How did they master/route effects to a mixer in the 80's?

I recently got my hands on a couple VSTs of emulations of old effects hardware (like the Eventide H3000) and then started to wonder how they did it back then, just with a tape machine, the effects modules and a mixer board. Did they route the effects to the mixer board with a lot of wires to the specific channels, or something more in depth here?

I hope that made sense. Thanks.

Aux sends most of the time, output of effect could be to stereo returns or use a input channel so eq was available..

Yes, auxiliary sends/returns, and also console channel inserts for inline processing.

The bigger the console and collection of outboard, the more comprehensive the patchbay needs to be.
