In my opinion, any effect can be the holy grail, as you put it. Its all about personnel preferences and the sounds you want.

Also, anything can be industry standard. If who ever use it in a professional manor, well then, that is industry standard then.

Do you mean the more esoteric items (like the Fairchild 670 compressor) or "standard" things (like the 1176 and LA2A compressors)?

Effects can be anything. What do you mean by fx? Distortion? Chorus? Reverb? Compression? Enhancers? Even EQ is an effect.

To my way of thinking, there is a world of difference between rack gear and pedals. Pedals are designed to be used with electric guitars. They would need to be adapted to use in a studio mixing situation. They also tend to have more self-noise and worse specs than professional rack gear.

And of course, there is a massive price differential. tedtan nominated a Fairchild 670 ($44,000 used) as a "holy grail" rack gear choice. Meanwhile a Late-’60s Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face guitar pedal would top out around $1200. And not for nothing, but there are plenty of people who if they won a 670 in a drawing, would sell it and use the money to buy a different compressor. It's not like there is broad agreement.

That normal people can afford? i liked these rack units.

ADA MP-1 for guiitar preamp. MOD IT!!!!

Lexicon PCM for reverb and chorus.

Pitch shift probably the Eventide 3000.

Phase, don't laugh...Korg A series. Check it out sometime.

Analog Delay, Moog analog , or 1/4" Reel to reel tape delay real thing.

Digital delay, my money will stay with Lexicon PCM.

Detuning -Eventide 3000, its mean. It don't move.

Compressor , 1176. Get 2.
