High-end gear or truck driving school?

Objective:

Please articulate the minimum collection of high-end gear (item, brand and model) that you personally require to build an end-to-end music recording/mix pipeline - without which you would rather just drive a truck. What does your 'MUST HAVE', not 'nice to have' list include?

For portions of your must-have pipeline that don’t - for you - need specifically to be high-end, Maybe just say ‘doesn’t matter’.

Obviously this is a bit abstract as no application is specified (genre, film vs downloadable mp3g files, studio vs live, etc.). Your imagination will do fine here. Please include those notions if you think relevant.

Mostly talking about the 'big pieces' here - not ever little thing.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Ray H.

indeed! - well then:

schoeps and neuheiser mics (too many to mention)
studer vista mixing console (any)
weiss eq1
jünger accent 1
quantec (any)
eventide (any)
lake lm44/smaart/measurement mic
rme interfacec (any)
3 pc's (to record, analyze, control)
phase/level meter/oscilloscope (if not integrated into a pc)
shure sm58s
nearfields of choice
headphones of choice
ups to last for min. 2 minutes in case of power loss

sorry to include some smaller items, yet the big piece of gear could not be used to it's maximum capacity without them! - and the alternative would not be truck driving but reading a book...

For mixing - all one really needs is a decent monitoring environment and a decent playback DA (and of course the DAW to drive it). Everything else is really personal preference or as you put it, “nice to have”.

For recording - all you really need is a nice, flexible vocal mic, maybe something to record acoustic and electric guitars with, and a quality preamp.

Anything else is “nice to have”.

If you want to get into the world of drums, Full band recording etc, you need to start with building proper rooms and the gear is a very small expense.

For most pro engineers and producers, they generally don’t find they’re doing this every day so their own “studios” are often just a mix/production space and a vocal booth.

Unless you’ve genuinely got the clients to make it work, there’s not much point building a “high end studio”.

This is kind of an odd question. Is it for a class assignment? It doesn’t really make sense in the real world.

I think truck-driving is becoming more obsolete than music/entertainment production...so: I'd like a nice console - anything really...a Trident or perhaps the new Sound Techniques...or an SSL...24 channels (16 for mixdown and the extra 8 for FX/parallel); conversion....I'm going to stick with RADAR Studio as it has the computer too; a couple of Neve-style preamps, some API-style, the Audient pre's are nice too for clean and maybe a couple of Sound Devices 7-series pre's. Mics: tube and FET, plus something modern like the WeissKlang; also multi-pattern LDC Neumann-style...might as well be a stereo pair; an assortment of dynamic mics; some ribbon mics...Coles, AEA and clip-on mics like DPA. Monitoring: the ADAM S3V's are nice plus maybe a smaller set of Focals and AKG K702 headphones (mixing) and some closed-backs (tracking) too. Obviously some room treatment and room correction hardware/software.
At least three of each type of instrument: synths, guitars, etc.

Outboard: the usual candidates. 1176-style comp; opto-comp. Eventide FX and the IGS Springtime. Quantec Yardstick. Tape machine...something from Mara. Limiters: Pendulum, Waves...(to be continued).
