Hardware SUONOBUONO nABC - launching tomorrow on Kickstarter!

PR: SUONOBUONO - nABC: Beyond sidechain compression

nABC stands for not Another Boring Compressor, and that's exactly what it is.
The nABC makes sidechain compression easy, flexible and intuitive: it is a an analog, stereo sidechain compressor whose sidechain can be triggered by MIDI, USB, analog synth signals (gate/CV), audio, or pedals, without any need to route sidechain audio signal from a kick drum and with the freedom to decide the time, depth and shape of each individual compression event.
The nABC allows to dynamically attenuate one instrument (for example the bass) when another instrument is playing (for example, the kick drum), giving a cool "breathing" effect to the sound and tightening the mix. In addition, and differently from traditional compressors, the nABC also allows to trigger sidechain compression at any given time, for example shaping the accent of only specific notes on a bassline. Since the shape of compression is not derived from the kick drum, new creative possibilities arise, with compression events that can be arbitrarily long or short. Even creative gating effects can be easily achieved.

The nABC has studio-grade audio quality, it is housed in an elegant machined aluminum case, it uses touch pads and its audio parameters can be automated by USB/MIDI and stored in presets. It can be equally used with modular synths, in digital studios or live.

The nABC is available on Kickstarter at significantly discounted price, starting from SEK 2990 (ca USD 320, EUR 280).

Looks really cool. Any chance of getting a combo xlr/trs jack instead of TRS only? Would be nice to have it as an easy option to connect to preamps for mic applications as well. Yes, I know it only takes an XLR to TRS cable but it would be so much simpler to be able to use the most commonly available connector type in pro audio.

Hi and thanks for the constructive comment! I understand your point, we actually had to optimize some aspects to achieve a small form factor that makes it easily portable. Xlr would have not been an option because of that. But suggestions are welcome for future designs!

Hi, many of you have asked for audio demos and tutorial for the nABC, so here come a couple videos:

This looks awesome. I have to ask - was this product at all inspired by the Drawmer M500? It's the only other remotely similar product I have found anywhere online. It has a few extra functions the NABC does not, such as being able to do rotating speaker simulations and the ability to LFO the filters. Might be worth a look for inspiration if you haven't already seen it. I will still probably go for an NABC over an M500 though since those 25 year old rack mount units are starting to fall apart. Can't wait till these hit the market!

Hi, thanks a lot for the nice words Actually the process was a bit different, I initially built the nABC for myself, for using it with my desktop and modular synths (so I wanted both gate/CV and MIDI/USB sidechain triggers) without having to route sidechain audio and getting crazy by adjusting attack/release all the time. But when I started SUONOBUONO and I saw the interest and added the more common audio sidechain line/inserts.

Quite frankly, the nABC does not have the ambition to replace high end dedicated rack compressors that cost several time more. I see it more as a fun and creative tool for musicians with a pretty clean sound. I actually just published an A/B comparison with a DBX and a Warm Audio 1176 clone, I hope you enjoy it:

Very Exciting! Can you tell us how much the price will increase after the kickstarter campaign ends? I am debating whether to save money on the beta version or pay a little extra for the full production version. Also, will the unit come with a power supply or do we need to provide our own?

Hi again You find 2 versions on Kickstarter, the beta which is, obviously, a beta and thus cheaper, and the "final" which will be delivered in November and it will be the same that you will find in shops in a similar timeframe.

I can tell that the price we are applying on Kickstarter is a promotional direct sale, so retail price will likely be higher than the Kickstarter "final", with exact figure depending on agreements still to be settled.
