We are updating the FAQ. I suspect a firewall issue. Could you please try with the firewall disabled?

I've done a "First Impression" screencast for Orb Composer

In this screencast I show a first use of Hexachords Orb Composer, a new music composing software with machine learning. Watch me having Orb Composer compose a very short of chamber music for piano, violin and cello.
The following steps are shown (mostly slight time-lapse):
  • setting up the DAW (Ableton Live 10) with routing from virtual Orb MIDI devices
  • setting up the required tracks and instruments in Orb Composer
  • setting and editing of chord progression and various music generation parameters
  • rehearsing the resulting composition between steps up to the final result
A short snippet of the result is audible in the first few seconds of this video. The used instruments are TruePi anos, Bohe mian Violin and Bo hemian Cello.
There is no explanation, no narration and no captions, merely me using (and still struggling with) Orb Composer and rehearsing the results.

Explanatory videos will follow soon, subscribe and use YT's "bell" feature for not missing them.

HiEnergy 5th April 2018 07:12 AM

In my second screencast with Orb Composer I show how to route MIDI to the DAW, in this case Abl.ton Live.

The following steps are shown:
  • setting up a project in Orb Composer with 4 equal instruments ("Piano" template consists of 4 pianos)
  • connecting an instrument block to a DAW track with a plug-in instance using Orb device and channel routing
  • connecting another instrument block to the same plug-in instance running in the DAW using an extra MIDI track in Live for routing purpose
  • some caveats when using Orb Composer with DAW and articulations

Have fun watching!

HiEnergy 8th April 2018 08:50 AM

In my latest video I have Orb Composer compose a piece of piano music.

The automatically generated music is then played back in Reaper.

Musical decisions on tonality, meters, chord progressions and clip parameters are left to the software and only slight changes done.

The following steps are shown (mostly slight timelapse):
  • manual addition of Theme blocks in Orb Composer
  • automatic creation of instrument clips in Orb Composer for fast arrangement of the musical structure
  • assignment of Orbs and channels in Ableton Live (Live only used for rehearsal)
  • manual creation of additional instrument clips in Orb Composer for enhancement
  • editing curves and regeneration of notes for enhancement
  • playing back the resulting MIDI in Reaper with Pianoroll and TruePianos keyboard visible. The MIDI export and import steps are not shown in the video.
There is no narration or other explanation in this video.

HiEnergy 8th April 2018 11:15 PM

This playthrough video shows what results Orb Composer is capable of.

The creation of this track took me about 2 hours, including instrument selection, DAW setup and revising Orb Composer's musical decisions.
All music you hear in this demo has been composed with Orb Composer, except for setting up and reworking the theme blocks and instrument clips, drawing the curves and revisiting some of Orb Composer's chord choices, no additional modifications were done.
The sounds are from u-he Diva, NI Kontakt and Spitfire Albion.
The DAW used for auditioning is Ableton Live 10.

Thanks Heiko for the nice videos ;)

Here is some very recent music done with Orb Composer by a very cool Japanese guy !

A very good use of Orb Composer IMO.

HiEnergy 19th April 2018 10:32 AM

Here's my latest playthrough screencast featuring Orb Composer:

This time it's piano (TruePianos), synth flute (Diva) and a synth pad from Synthmaster.

Intriguing piece of software magic!

I'm tempted, but…

So far, as I understand it, the following styles, or genres, are implemented: Piano, Electro, Pop/Rock, Ambient and in the Pro version a further two: Orchestra and Strings.

But what about Jazz? Big band, Trad, Swing, Bebop, Fusion, Acid…

Are there any plans to teach the AI how to improvise and come up with surprises? ;-)

I'd buy Orb Pro in a snap.

Kind regards,

Joachim

Atak 22nd June 2018 10:10 AM

My question as well

Would be nice to know the answer.

Hexachords 24th June 2018 09:47 PM

Hello :)
Sorry for the late reply, for sone reason, we didn't receive the notifications ...
Yes, we are working on implementing very specific styles/genres ;)
Cheers

Hexachords 24th June 2018 09:50 PM

We also released a video on "Creating a POP/INDIE track with Orb Composer" ;)

We have electronic music tutorials with OC (software and hardware) planned in a few days !

Cheers

HiEnergy 30th June 2018 10:23 AM

In my latest Orb Composer playthrough video I've tried out the new chord inversion feature in OC 1.1 in a vocal setting (piano/female solo/male choir/string pad).
The ability to copy/paste clips is a huge time saver. kfhkh

Hexachords 8th July 2018 11:26 AM

A new basic electronic music video with Orb ;)
The version with hardware synths is coming soon !

Have a great Sunday,

HiEnergy 13th July 2018 11:29 AM

In my latest Orb Composer playthrough video I make use of the new "custom rhythm" feature in version 1.2 for creating a piano accompaniment with alternating bass and block chords.

spitfire31 13th July 2018 02:02 PM

Hm. I guess I might be a victim of elevated expectations after the initial hype.

So far, I haven't heard anything that I would call interesting music. It sounds to me that the vaunted AI is more on the level of a piano beginner, let loose on a Casio auto accompaniment keyboard.

It seems that instilling a soul in an AI is a real hurdle.

I wish the Orb people the best of luck with that challenge and will visit this thread next year. Or maybe the next… ;-)

Kind regards,

Joachim

Jazz & or Rhythm and Blues

Does this have blues Scale and Jazz chord progressions?

Unfortunately Orb Composer for now merely supports diatonic scales (plain major/minor and "church modes"), no harmonic/melodic minor, no gypsy/spanish/bebop/whatever scales.

I hope that they implement more scales (or even user-defined ones) in an updated version.

HiEnergy 9th August 2018 04:59 PM

Here's another video of mine, showing the OC workflow for creating some Electronica music in the mixolydian mode.
The DAW template setup is not part of this video, no export or refining steps in the DAW have been done.

HiEnergy 13th August 2018 10:19 PM

People have been asking me whether the musical output of Orb Composer is very monotonous or rather diversified.

In my latest video I try to answer that question by having Orb Composer re-compose the same block of music over and over again, making some changes to musical parameters for forcing OC to recompose.
The music is quite simple, just piano accompaniment and a violin melody.
Orb Composer - how much variety can it create?

HiEnergy 15th August 2018 04:07 PM

I've created some piano music with Orb Composer.
Watch the video here with Orb Composer view, virtual keys, harmony analysis and piano roll:

EDIT: fixed broken embedding
