I’ve just noticed Golden Age have updated their product page to include images of the inside. Warm Audio also have images of the inside of their WA73 and there are some images of the inside of the Heritage Audio Elite HA73EQ here :-

Heritage Audio Elite Series

I have no knowledge of electronics so what are people’s thoughts of the build quality of the inside of these 1073 clones?

Golden Age Pre 73 Premier

I've just ordered my Pre73 Premier from Thomann. Should be here in a few days. I've been working in the box for so long and since I've been tracking vocals with an SM7B i just needed more gain. Was debating the focusrite ISA ONE but in the end settled on the Golden Age Pre73 Premier.

There isn't a lot of info out there yet online, no youtube reviews from what i can see. So i'll be glad to upload some audio samples and maybe do a video as i'm working on a new EP at the moment. Can't wait to try it out!

best,

Dan

Sounds great Dan!
Let us know your impressions once you got it.
From my experience it's perfect with the SM7B and I think you won't regret it

Very good unit. Not much different than other 1073 units. I doubt anyone could tell the difference in a blind test. Nice clean gain, great sound, no complaints.

Yes, good question! Is it just cosmetics, or some nicer bits inside too?

According to Golden Age, the power supply has been “beefed up”?

It's very different actually.
The Pre-73 Premier uses Carnhill input and output transformers, better knobs and switches, better electric components, better XLR connectors in the back, different wiring inside and it has a -14 db output pad.

This company’s re-releasing updated versions on their products is utter bs

It’s not software for Pete’s sake... do it right the first time... or maybe one new version... but, this is like the 4th take on their 1073

It’s irksome

They only share the Carnhill transformers - everything else is new to my knowledge.

I asked at Golden Age Premier and here's a list with additional improvements of the Golden Age Premier PRE-73 compared to the Mk III Plus:

- a classic style with grey front panel, a red gain knob, white rectangular push button switches and a grey output level metal knob.

- most connections are soldered, only the connections to the GAIN switch uses a connector.
Compared to the MKIII, 20 connection points that are directly located in the signal path are replaced by a soldered connection. Adding connections for the power rails, 24 connection points are soldered.
Please note that each and one of those 24 connection points actually consists of three separate connections in the MKIII (and in other products using a similar connection method):
1. the cable wire crimped to the female metal connector part.
- 2. the female to male connector metal part
3. the male connector metal part soldered to the circuit board.
- Only no 3 is used in the soldered connections in the PRE-73 PREMIER, so there are actually 24 x 2 = 48 less connections in the PREMIER compared to the MKIII Plus.

The advantage of doing it like this is a higher signal integrity and better long term reliability.
The disadvantage is that it that it´s much more work demanding to use soldered connections, it makes the production process more complicated which increases cost. This is reason why most manufacturers use connectors instead of soldered connections.

- polystyrene capacitors in the amplifier circuits.

- the capacitor value in the power supply is doubled.

- a - 14 dB output pad is added allowing the user to overdrive the output stage and transformer.

The PREQ-73 Premier, at $1200 a pair new, sure are appealing.

The marketing speak mentions 3 transformers (1 line in, 1 mic in, 1 line out), but it appears the Carnhills are only stock for the mic input and the line output. Any clues on what is going on with the line input transformer? Which model line input transformer comes stock?

Quote:
"The microphone and line input and the line output are transformer balanced, using three different transformers, each one optimized for its purpose. This is the way audio components were built before integrated circuits became available.

- UK made Carnhill microphone input and line output transformers.
- The pcb is prepared for the Carnhill 9046M line input transformer."
