WATER is a powerful VST/AAX/AU suite carefully crafted with the goal of building a set of characterful tools that reproduce the sonic behavior of ultra-rare vintage hardware devices and include new features making it flexible and suitable for the demands of modern productions. Water embodies the spirit of revolution and the desire to experiment typical of the 1960s!

WATER suite includes three different plug-ins:
• WATER Channel-strip
• WATER EQ (Passive Germanium Equalizer standalone module)
• WATER COMP (Limiter/Compressor standalone module)
The Water EQ is created from an original passive stereo Germanium topology EQ unit dating back to 1961 and a set of 'Homebrew' additional hardware circuits, hand-built using original components and sampled by SoundDrops (SteDal). SteDal's meticulous designs, following the original circuit schematics, helped us to include not just 9dB of boost for the MID band, as it is in the original, but also a 9dB of cut. In a similar way we also added extra frequency choices for the LF and HF bands and the high-pass filter. Further to this, within the standalone unit we added mid-side and dual-mono operation modes. As always with such modules, we provide the option to switch on and off the pass-though tone distortions of the original HW, allowing the user to avoid or embrace the frequency, phase and harmonic distortions of the gear.

The Water Limiter/Compressor is based on a 1968, discretely built, diode bridge device that delivers an overwhelming sound. With three of some of the very best transformers in the audio path, it gives a smooth, larger than life coloration that is reminiscent of classic legendary tube devices. Made in the '60s the hardware is unfortunately very rare to find these days. Our take on this design is to make this great device even more flexible and powerful: we have included the extras of an attack shape modulation control, high-range HPF in the side-chain, some additional faster release curves derived from the Ebony mod. D473 VCA compressor, the ability to switch on and off the pass-though tone of the original HW unit, and a dry/wet control for parallel compression. We also managed to add a high-quality hardware modeled clipper at the output for this dream compressor!

DETAILS
For each plug-in included in the Water suite there is a "Standard" version and an alternative "ZL*" version which operates at * zero latency, at the cost of extra processing resources, it is therefore most suitable to use when tracking.

Water is using the latest Acustica CORE 12 engine representing a new technological advancement by Acustica:

• Upgraded SASM (Symmetric & Asymmetric Saturation Modeling) high performance saturation algorithm;
• Introduction of a new post-production sample de-noising tech for cleaner deconvolved impulses called STT (Super transient technology);
• Full compatibility with Client/Server architecture integrated by default in Acqua plugins;
• Engine optimization, introducing a new highly efficient algorithm. This innovative technique is applied to all the deconvolved impulses for further de-noise processing and subsequent elimination of any incorrect low-level behavior (including the so-called "echo bug").

CORE 12 allows performance improvements for each plug-in of the Acqua Effects series, while at the same time preserving all the features already supported in previous CORE upgrades.

WATER EQUALIZER
• (CL) Control link: on and off. Switch on to simultaneously alter both the left and right channel settings.
• (MS) Mid-side: on and off. Allows for mid/side processing, where the left channel EQ is dedicated to the mid signal and the right channel EQ to the side signal.
• (PRE) Hardware EQ pass-through tone simulation : on and off. Dynamically emulates the frequency, phase and harmonic distortion of the original hardware. Includes the complete EQ audio path with both an input and output transformers and Germanium transistors.
• HPF: 6 frequencies (30*, 40*, 60, 120, 200*, 300* Hz): stepped frequency selector with an off position.
• BASS: 3 frequencies with shelf shape (30*, 60, 120* Hz), stepped frequency selector, and continuous gain from -15dB to +15dB.
• MID: 11 frequencies with bell shape (0.5*, 0.7*, 1*, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8*, 11.2*, 16* kHz), stepped frequency selector, and continuous gain from -15dB** to +15dB.
• HIGH: 3 frequencies with shelf shape (6*, 12, 24* KHz) stepped frequency selector, and continuous gain from -15dB to +15dB.

* note that these frequencies are not present in the original hardware module. They were derived from the original circuits with the magic of Acustica's tech and SteDal's (SoundDrops) expertise.
** the original gear that inspired Water only had the ability to boost. Deriving 'cut' samples was possible by working with the original circuits.

WATER COMPRESSOR/LIMITER
• Preamp: Hardware compressor pass-through tone simulation: on and off. Dynamically emulates the frequency, phase and harmonic distortion of the original hardware. Emulates the complete compressor audio path including 3 audio transformers.
• Peak: Clipper: on and off. Threshold set at 0dBFS.
• SHMOD: Adjustable Attack Shape: from 0 to 4. Position 2 gives the original attack time of the modeled compressor. Position 1 gives the fastest curve setting. Going from 1 down to 0, a further look-ahead function is enabled. The range/amount of look-ahead goes from 0 to 4 milliseconds. Values above 2 slow down the attack time.
• THRESHOLD: from -48dB to 0dB.
• COMP: Comp on/off control: turn on or off the compressor and limiter options.
• FILTER: Side-chain filter: off or HPF ranging from 50 Hz to 250 Hz.
• Meters: gain reduction from 0dB to 42dB.
• INPUT TRIM: from -24dB to 24dB. This function allows for a ‘one knob’ internal gain staging control by automatically linking input and output gain stages with an inverse law.
• RELEASE*: from 0.1sec (E1) to 2.5 sec (hard right).
• MAKEUP GAIN: from 0dB to 24dB.
• MIX: Dry/Wet Mix for parallel compression: from 0 to 100%.
• Sidechain: External Side-chain: off or on.

* Note that further work on circuit level with the original device was needed to derive longer release time (above 1.5 sec). The fastest E1/E2/E3 release times have been taken from our EBONY COMP (mod. D473) based on a vintage VCA dynamic processor developed in the 1970s - a unit used in a lot of classical mastering sessions, especially in Europe.

WATER CHANNEL STRIP with EQ, compressor and preamps options
• Master Input Trim: from -24dB to 24dB. This function allows for a ‘one knob’ internal gain staging control by automatically linking input and output gain stages with an inverse law.
• Hardware compressor pass-through tone simulation (PRE-AMPLIFIERS): off, PRE1 and PRE2. Emulates dynamically the frequency, phase and harmonic distortion of the hardware. PRE1 emulates the Germanium circuit part of the EQ module. PRE2 does the same but also includes both the input and output transformers.
• Output Gain: from -24dB to 24dB.
• I/O Meters: input (INPUT), output (OUTPUT): stereo led, from -24dB to +6dB.
• HPF: 6 frequencies (30*, 40*, 60, 120, 200*, 300* Hz): stepped frequency selector. On and off button provided.

ABOUT ACUSTICA AUDIO:
Acustica Audio creates faithful software emulations of rare vintage or modern hardware gear, and new hybrids impossible in the analogue domain. Acustica's development approach is unique for the market and it is based on dynamic sampling and a proprietary Volterra series nonlinear engine. The company also builds dedicated analogue circuits in order to sample and include these in their software. This model delivers very similar to analog gear sound with hardware-like transient response and sonic quality that overcomes the limitations of other software emulations.

ABOUT NEBULA AND ACQUA EFFECT PLUG-INS:
Nebula is Acustica Audio's sampler plug-in able to load external sample libraries of various sound processors. An Acqua is a stand-alone plug-in based on skinned collection of Nebula libraries with added routing and control functionalities. Aquas are developed by combining one or more Nebula's instances. This process called 'parametrization' is achieved by using script languages proprietary to Acustica Audio and does not require external tools or compilers.

I agree on that.

For me it is a really agressive EQ.
I like the high shelf on 24k. A LOT!
I like the bottom to, and mid used mildly..
I didnt completely like that there is no output compensation on the eq.

And have yet to vibe with the compressor, most likely because of user-error! :P
This bundle might not be for me..
But sounding as acustica always do! And surely got its own flavour!!

Hi Doom, I wouldn't say so. Water is based on a solid-state diode-bridge topology and LA2A is an optical valve unit. But with the original slow release setting in Water you can achieve some 'levelling'. And with 3 transformers in the audio path, Water certainly has vintage character, still a very different beast all together.

---

And a quick note for those who got Water or are trialling Water. There is a little mistake in the manual related to the SHMOD function of the compressor (manual should be fixed today or early next week!). With all other Acquas the default value is 2 = HW attack, below 2 attack gets faster, with lookahead added below 1, above 2 it gets slower. SHMOD also changes the attack shape...

Now, due to the hardware ultra-fast attack time and specific shape, unlike other sampled by Acustica Audio dynamic processors, short lookahead time is required for the Water compressor to obtain its original attack shape and for the SHMODE control to function properly. This is why in Water the SHMOD feature behaves differently compared to that in previous Acqua compressor plugins.

So position 2 = HW shape and time, but this one has a tiny lookahead. 2 to 4 is slower and this identical to the way it does in all other Acquas. Postion 0 in Water is like position 1 in other Acquas, so faster attack + lookahead. So essentially Water missed 0 to 1, as it already has some lookahead, and 2 has a tiny bit of lookahead. To quote GC:

"I'll try to explain it here, I hope it is the best explanation: 2 is the usual "2" meaning, so the original attack. This time I was forced to add a small lookahead, sampled, because the original unit features it (really it delays the other line, but the final effect is a lookahead). This looahead is FIXED, you can't tune it. The "4" position is the usual shmod position. The "0" position is the usual shmod "1" position."

Sorry for being thick here but if pos 4 is the usual pos 2 for other the Acquas HW, shouldn't the plugin default to pos 4 when opening the plugin as the others do?

1-IOW exactly what # is the HW pos.?
2-shouldn't the plugin be set to the HW default when opening as the other Acquas do? currently it opens to pos 0

thx

No. He meant that '4' position acts just like the '4' position on other Aqua plugins.

Basically 2 to 0 is different on Water and everything after 2 should be normal operation just like the other plugins.

So again, what is the default HW pos.? it's 0 on startup, is it 0 then?

No. '2' is the hardware position. The default of 0 on startup is a bug as far as I know.

.. though it does sound amazing at '0' position too. Ridiculously fast attack in a very pleasant way.

I got it. So the manual was correct all along & doesn't need to be changed for that sentence.

"SHMOD:Position 2 gives the original attack time of the modeled compressor.

Hang on, I thought the bug was in the first manual which said default Shmod was 2, but v6 of the manual says 0 is the default, which is the default.

Talk about confusing.

Hey guys, sorry for the confusion. For the first manual we used a text I wrote for the usual case with all other Acquas. Then I was given a different information and so that manual was changed accordingly. Only after this GC contacted me to tell me the exact situation with the different positions and tell that my previous info was wrong. So the manual is wrong and it will be corrected - I imagine first thing on Monday. But here is what is going on...

2 = HW but it has a small fixed lookahead.

This lookahead is fixed and doesn't ever change, no matter what position you pick. It is simply needed to recreate accurately the initial part of the attack of the HW unit. For this reason there is no other variable lookahead implemented in Water (usually from 1 to 0 there is variable lookahead, but here there is no such thing). The only thing that changes in Water is the time and curve of the attack.

usual 1 = 0 in Water
usual 4 = 4 in Water
2 in Water = HW but with small lookahead
the usual variable lookahead from 1 to 0 here doesn't happen
instead you always have a short fixed lookahead

No problem, a simple fix I'm sure. The first release of Cream had the same issue, the channel strip loaded with setting 0 instead of 2.

The compressor in Water is really really excellent. Used on the mix buss, with just 2 or 3db of gain reduction (and slightly backing off on the SHMOD control) it creates weight, depth, clarity and it breaths bringing the mix to life. It's the best and most realistic Acqua compressor to date IMO.
