Just about any soundtrack composed by Thomas Newman (Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, A Series of Unfortunate events, etc.). And just about any soundtrack composed by his cousin Randy Newman (The Natural, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Cars, Parenthood, The Natural, and way too many to name).... or his brother David Newman (also a big list).

amen to that. the underscore after the battle, where they read the letter from the stranger's wife is so evocative, that entire scene pretty much brings me to tears every time (even just hearing the music without the dialogue.

I'd add to the list the following three, which films represent the most well-executed integration of story, film and soundtrack into a final experience that outsizes the sum of its parts by several scales of magnitude:

Once Upon a Time in the West
Death Wish II
Cooley High

man, i love those three movies!

The Third Miracle

For television, I really like Snuffy Walden. And whoever does The Closer.

For my taste:

Most boooombastic intro into a movie ever: Star Wars IV - A New Hope

Touchiest overall soundtrack ever: The Perfect Storm

My favourite 30 sec of any soundtrack ever: At the beginning of "Enemy at the Gates", the music when Jude Law is watching Rachel Weisz on that train to Stalingrad.

+1 for Carnivale. Don't know if it's my most favorite, but it's great stuff!

Others :

House Of Spirits (movie - in psarticular the opening track or two - some of the most beautiful and emotionaly powerful symphonic music ever! Movie was OK but a little disappointing after listening to the soundtrack for a couple years first)

Twin Peaks (TV series)

Aliens (movie)

Babylon 5 (TV series - in particular the 3rd season)

The Abyss (movie - great with the movie but too fragmented to listen to stand alone for the most part)

Lady Death (movie - buy the soundtrack cd and skip the movie. Movie was just OK but they buried Bil Brown's beautiful score! )

Columbus and the Age of Discovery (TV documentary)

Mrs. Sofel (movie)

Delta Airlines (radio and maybe TV commercial that used the song "Adiemus")

2001 (movie)

Lord of the Rings (movies)

Smalleville (TV series - for their expert use of songs by popular artists to expotentially amplify the power and emotion of the story! kudos!)

My Name Is Nobody (movie)

Jesus Christ Super Star (original broadway cast sound track)

The Shining (movie)

Last Temptation Of Christ (movie)

Definitively, the BEST movie soundtrack EVER was Blow.

Iwouldn't put it in the cd player, but EVERY song fits perfectly with EVERY scene and comes in perfectly. A thing of brilliance. That movie was directed very well in general, but watch it and see what I mean.
