Victory at Sea- wasn't Bernard Herrmann the composer? Or was that Franz Waxman? (Either way, BRILLIANT!)

I'm still floored by the haunting work that Ennio Morricone did for "The Mission", or John Williams' score & Itzhak Stern's violin solos on "Schindler's List"- WHERE ARE THE JOHN WILLIAMS SCORES ON THIS LIST? He's done some of the most amazing stuff in the last 25 years...

How about John Barry's score for Midnight Cowboy?

Yeah, classics: "Conan The Barbarian" introduced a SLEW of people to Carmina Burana....

As "Apocalypse Now" did with Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries

Danny Elfman's "Music for a Darkened Theatre" is a great dual CD....

and Clockwork Orange, YES! Absolutely!!
Every film Stanley Kubrick did had incredible attention to sonic detail and scoring...(though 2001 put me to sleep in some sections)

kubrick was a genius at using music that already existed before the film. people will look back at the stuff he did 100 years from now when all the cgi crap done in the last 15 years has long since gone. his movies have always been hated upon release and then the more time goes by the more people are amazed by them.

the pre existing music is used both ironically and not. some scores that are composed for films feel really cheesy and over the top...too obvious, like it is telling you exactly how to feel about the images.

whereas kubrick used the music of master musicians (beethoven and especially ligeti and bartok) to futher the ambiguity of his own work. it really is remarkable.

this includes the soldiers singing the mickey mouse song at the end of full metal jacket.

also second herzog's use of music in general to cool effect. he seems to really like blues /rock guitar. grizzly man is very cool. as are many other films.

Elfman is very good.....I egarly await to see anything he works on.....although Willy wasnt as good as I think he could have done.... the umpa tracks left a lot to be desired and was pretty redundant.

Falcon and Snowman.....but I am a Pat Metheny freak so.....fwiw....

Trevor Rabins work too is very good.....

some of john williams's best known works have been straights lifts of anton dvorak so mabey we should list him here as well even if he never scored for film... he died just after the turn of the century. but music from his 9th symphony... from the new world... has been used as cues in films.

heres in example of a passage of the the 4th movement from the new world symphony where you can here both the jaws theme and i think the next theme is used star wars.

enjoy

Here for the gear

The 5th Element by Eric Serra.
The way he works sound design into the music score should be textbook material.

Shadow of the Vampire by Dan Jones,

Never has such a small orchestra osunded so creepy! (Except the Cronos Quartet!)

I think Miklos Rozsa's work for Alfred Hitchcock's "Spellbound" should be here too.

Also Michel LeGrand's music for "Une Femme est Une Femme" and just about all of his work for Jean Luc Godard (before LeGrand went Hollywood!)

This is one of my all time favorite films.

The music that's used during Jonathan's journey through the Carpathian Mountains is beautiful.

The scene where the kid plays the violin gets me every time.
