Here for the gear

Is my present pc enough for a daw?

Home built:
i5-2400
8gb ram
ssd with Windows 7
WD Caviar Black for samples and audio
Seagate 7200 rpm for everything else

Would a 2006 Mac Pro 2.66 be better or worse?

I'd think it's plenty powerful enough for typical DAW use, but depending on what you need it to do who knows. I've heard of some users who have very powerful 6 core machines with 48 GB of ram, yet still need 'more'.... Some of these people still have a need to network, or sync multiple machines together. I have to assume they're doing orchestra stuff.

Though all my music machines use older quad core CPU's, and run under Win XP, each can handle quite a bit on their own. I was using one machine for everything just fine for my style of music (various shades of rock) for some years. But being they use older technology, and my needs grew like everyone else, I now relegate each of them to handle certain tasks, and sync them together as I need more resources. This is my own solution.

the i5 is a solid machine. it's not a omgz beast rig, but definitely enough to handle professional size mixes. consider that people were using single core pentium 4's forever.

the i5 machine will smoke the 2006 mac pro like a pancake.
