UAD Apollo Quad / Apollo 16 for me? If so, which one?

Hi there

I have the chance to get the UAD Apollo Quad and Apollo 16 for a really good price but I am not sure if it would make sense to extend my current setup and if so, which one I should go for.

I got this offer (brand new):

Apollo quad:
- 2200.- bucks
- including Thunderbold 2 interface
- 995 $ voucher for UAD plugins

Apollo 16:
- 2600.- bucks
- including Thunderbold 2 interface
- 1295 $ voucher for UAD plugins

My current setup:
- PC, i7-i980X, 12 GB RAM, Windows 7 (64 Bit)
- Ableton Live 9 & Bitwig Studio
- UAD Quad PCIe with around 30 UAD Plugins
- SPL 2Control monitor controller with 2 Headphones and 2 pairs of speakers connected
- RME Fireface 400 connected to PC's mainboard's onboard firewire slot
- Neumann TLM 102 microphone connected to Fireface 400 (I have used the microphone only 2-3 times within the last 3 years)
- Virus TI (USB connected, no Audio to Fireface)
- Waldorf Pulse 2 (stereo out to Fireface)
- Dave Smith Instruments Pro2 (stereo out to Fireface)

Additional synths that are on my order list and will arrive as soon as they are available:
- DSI Pro6
- Korg Arp Odyssey

I have read a couple of reviews but I still got lots of questions and I would be happy to get some opinions from you guys.

1) Should I go for the Apollo and sell the RME fireface?
2) If so, which one would you choose for and why?
3) If I choose the Apollo Quad, would you get rid of the SPL 2Control?
4) Should I connect the Apollo via Firewire or Thunderbolt? If Firewire, do I need a separate fireface PCIe card or can I use the onboard firewire slot?
If Thunderbold: are there recommended thunderbold PCIe card for PC?
5) The Apollo package includes the "Realtime Analog Classics Plus Bundle" including 9 plugins where I already own 7 of them for my UAD quad. Will I be able to sell these plugins since I already own 7 of them?

Thanks in advance,
Nico

Lives for gear

I don't think the TB drivers for windows are out yet from UAD. You better check. on the mac side i had problems with firewire and no issues with the TB connection.

As stated above, check to be sure Thunderbolt works with your setup. If it does, it is the way to go. I would not hesitate to go Apollo over RME personally, but these are personal preferences. I am spoiled from being able to monitor with UAD plug ins now. Makes it hard to use anything else. You can try to sell your plug ins but pretty much everyone has the analog classics bundle.

thanks guys.
So, thunderbold drivers for windows are not out yet, after the product is on the market for more than 2 years?
