8ch Thunderblot or USB Interface for New iMac Recording Rig

Suggestions for an 8ch Thunderbolt or USB (3?) audio interface for a new iMac recording rig. Must be able to reliably play all 8 channels of audio out consistently... are USB interfaces stable now? To much latency?

Finally upgrading from the old mac pro tower into an i7 iMac - this machine will also be sharing HD video editing duties which I'm also figuring out... real time consumer HDMI out to a consumer monitor via an AJA box.

There are some interesting looking MOTU audio boxes... The UA Apollo's (etc) seem a bit pricy and excessive for what I need on the audio side. I'll probably be using some combo of Logic, Reason, and probably a lower end version of Pro-Tools.

Looking forward to thoughts and feedback - ideally I'd like 8 channels of AD/DA for under $1,000 - $1,500

Thanks.
