It's strange I own the echoboy as well, but the h-delay has some strange vibe to it which make it sound appealing and it does something even the echoboy cannot do in terms of vibe, just my impressions.

I use h-delay and echoboy on every mix. Echo boy sounds very clean to me, h- delay ,dirty and full of vibe. Both have a purpose

Use on almost everything I make or mix now:

SSL Channel Strip
CLA-76
API-2500
SSL Bus Comp
(Just Learned about this one) Waves Doubler

i honestly think i can get a solid mix with using nothing but the waves SSL Channel Strip. I honestly think it is THAT good. It's really helpful to have EQ'ing, comp, gate, gain knob, and phase polarity switch all on one plugin. If you know what you're doing the SSL Channel can double as an overdriver/distortion effect.

NLS just isn't an everyday use plugin. Not the best waves has put out either.

I could live without Waves plug-ins if needed, but it would seriously slow down some of my workflow.

These are some I use the most:
- RBass
- RVox
- VEQ4
- DeEsser
- L2
- C4
- IR-L

I use both UA and Waves extensively. And with waves, I fully endorse...
1. The CLA comps series
2. The whole H series (love the comp and delay!)
3. The V Series
4. API Series (one of their best ever)

However, never found a verb better than the UA Lexi, or a tape emu better than the UA atr102... Otherwise I would sell off my UA cards and plugs gladly!!!

I also use Waves and UAD plugs side by side, among others. Thing is, the new 1176 and LA-2A from UAD I believe are better than the Waves alternatives. The same for the API eq's, I compared the UAD and Waves side by side and every time I liked the UAD better.

Have you compared them?

I have compared the 1176 & LA-2A, but not the API plugs.
To me the difference is very slight. I don't hear a ton of difference.
And what I do hear, I would say isn't a quality issue.
Plus, the waves versions are native, so no hit to my UA cards.
I can mix with either version with no problem of course!

I don't know about top five as I've only used a few dozen of Waves' plugs. Of the fairly new stuff I like NLS a lot, though, and I'll be damned if J37 isn't doing something really, really nice at times as well.

for me at this time I can only name 2 that I use all the time - but I do love them.

H-Delay (easy to dial in, nice sound, nice gui)
&
J37 (Which is also great as a tape delay and does great things on busses, pref mix into it don't just stick it on afterwards. ALSO use proper gain staging!)

EDIT > now use and love RS56, Scheps 73 & REDD so that's my 5 waves essentials.

I was previously using the CLA comps and the SSL strip/Bus comp but switched over to N.I for the vintage comps (Softube), though the CLA are good still, and Duende for the SSL/Bus comp = much better to my ears (and mixes) than the waves SSL (esp the bus comp)
