Installing Drum Samples... Playback Engine setup

Curious... Is it a better idea to install and load drum samples from my firewire drive (Which is a part of a daisy chain I use with a Pro 40 and an Imac), or to install and load samples from my local HD, and just avoid the chain all together (which is what I've done)?

I am recording bass and guitar onto the firewire drive as well.

Would appreciate the help..
