Using a Digitech GNX4 as generic controller for Cubase 6.

I recently learned about the generic remote function of cubase 6 where you can set up your external midi device to control the software. I went into the generic remote menu select the GNX4 pedals midi channel and activate the learn function to have it sense the incoming midi data and remember it as a message to control transport funtions. Stop, rewind, play, rec, etc.

However, instead of mapping each button press to a different midi location, they all show up as the same midi channel (16) and address and max value (127) no matter which button I press on the GNX. I'm starting to think that the GNX sends sysex messages when pushing the buttons. I had it set up before with protracks plus to do hands free recording but can't figure it out with Cubase.

Anyone know if cubase can use sysex for midi generic remote control?
