DSP FX Question

I am considering getting a DSP card for fx for mixing my music rather than using vsts or the stuff that comes in reason (since rewire is already resource hoggish) my question is is it true that dsp cards dont take away from ur computer processor power like most plug ins do. I am running on a old computer and I dont want to buy another one until I really have to plus Id like to use these fx knowing that Id be saving on cpu power when I do decide to upgrade my pc. To me thats just more power to use for later. Is it true that all the strain from these fx are only put on the hardware? thanks for the help
