Are you sure?
Not sure what you mean by dedicated multichannel audio layer in the os.
DirectX? Who used that for pro audio besides Cakewalk.
The mac quadra 840 av had 8 channel audio capability in 1993 as long at it had a multichannel sound card. (no need for digi dsp cards)
Apple midi has been part of the os since at least system 7.0 (1991),
though i agree most people used OMS.
Which had capabilities windows 7 still doesn't have, for example naming midi channels\devices.
I'm no mac fanboy, but it seems more fair to say windows played catch up until windows xp.

That were 2 PCI cards, one for the processing and one with a SCSI-controller connected to an 882 AD/DA.
It even had onboard DSP: You could insert up to 7 single EQ-bands into your tracks... ;-)

I used something called Digital Orchestrator Plus as a kid. I had a midi keyboard and made instrumental covers of pop songs. They did not sound great.

Cubase on an Atari ST synced with a TASCAM 16 track and SOundcraft mixer. It actually sounded great. S1000 and S950 and a bunch of really ****ty sound modules.

Ooops, I thought DAW would mean that harddisk-recording is involved.
Then my first music workstation was the ATARI ST with Notator 1988.
I added the Export, Unitor and later synced it to a TASCAM DA-88 for audio.
