Firewire, USB2 or whatever.......
Don't need any pres. ....just an interface.

there are lots of interfaces at music123.com and zzounds.com.
to save me retyping search thru my back posts re laptop configuring tips.
just enter my name in search.
if your thinking of recording multiple tracks to seperate discreet tracks on a laptop , just be aware that on some laptops this might be problematic rather than straight mono or stereo recording. therefore you will need to run tests.

discreet channels.

Thanks Manning,
not really finding the answers though.
I do want to record 8-12 discreet channels at once........
I know there are interfaces by MOTU, RME etc......but will they actually do what I want via USB, Firewire or even a card?

Hello,

8 channels is easy;

RME Multiface II
Presonus Firepod
RME Fireface 800

12 channels will take;

2 Presonus Firepods at 44.1/48k max sampling rate for a total of 16 I/O

or,

1 RME Fireface 800 + RME Octamic D at 44.1/48/88.4/96K for a total of 16 analog ins and 8 outs.

I don't know what your budget is, but I would say a Apogee AD16x with FW interface will do what you what to do and that even on a very high level!
Other than that maybe RME or MOTU.

snedley...
ok nice laptop. core duo ??
if you find a stumbling block it will be a slow internal drive possibly.
could you please post the EXACT MODEL NUMBER of the toshiba and i'll have a look at the specs.
also i would contact the fine vendors like rme et al that other posters have suggested and check with the sound device manufacturer if there are any potential issues.
i suspect you might have to upgrade to 2 gigs ram to be safe as well consider a fast external hard drive with a fat cache to record to.
if you go this route. its good procedure to plug in the exterrnal firewire or usb hard drive BEFORE you boot up the laptop.
in addition if you decide on an external usb hd for example try to keep other usb devices to a minimum so the hard drive has free rein over the usb bus.
just some ideas.
also you will need to run tests...for example...maybe you can record the first 8 or whatever tracks ok....but where the rubber hits the road is playing back say 24tracks while recording lots of new ones. this is where the internal hard drive will limit you because the win OS is ALSO on the internal hard drive.
what some people do is upgrade the internal hd to 7200 rpm PLUS
use the external fw or usb hd for recording.
what rates do you anticipate doing 44.1/16 bit?? or higher ??
anyway post the model no of the toshiba please.peace.
