Cubase5 disk overload / audio dropouts!

hey guys!
i have a big problem.
im working on a small cubase session at the moment,...about 2 stereo and 10 mono files.wanted to record some guitars today.
since yesterday cubase causes audio dropouts during playing the session cause the disk meter is overloading,...for 2 seconds,...it stops playing and after 2 seconds the session goes on,..after 10 seconds the same again.
i have windows xp, intel 920 i7, 3 GB ram, 1 TB HD, ...i mixed a session with 50 tracks few weeks ago so im pretty sure that the problem cant be the power of the pc.
could it be that the harddisc has a defect?
really dont know what to do now.
any ideas???

cheers
