Video Connection Resolution Gurus

Asking cause Im no video guru with TV's

If you have a 1080P video card in your PC (Dell XPS 8300) with an HDMI output on it and you connect it to the HDMI input on a TV that is 720P( Dynex 32"), will it work or do the resolutions have to match to work correctly.

Windows starts its boot up and I can see the startup stuff then the screen goes to NO SIGNAL. Also, If i have the VGA connection on the video card hooked up to the LCD Monitor and its working and I then plug in the TV HDMI cable, the screen on both goes blank and I have to shut off the PC.

This is someone elses computer that Im trying to help with but Im no guru with video crap

Thanks

If you use an HDMI connection there won't be any problem, if it's a reasonably modern model, your flat screen will automatically adjust the signal to 720p. Of course you will still have to configure your screens (the computer screen and your flat screen) as either duplicates, one the extension of the other or one on and the other off. You do that by pressing the windows key + P.
