Your most used plugin vocal compressor? Dynamics Plugins

Your most used plugin vocal compressor?

I usually track through a distressor and then use the cla-3a. I agree the cla-76 bluey is fantastic too.
I find it tougher to get a similar sound without using the distressor first though.

As I've owned more hardware comps, my most used software comps have changed. My first tracking comp was the TLA-100A so I found that the BF76 complimented it well ITB.

After some time, I picked up an MC77 (HW) and did some serial compression. The only thing was in doing that, I couldn't undo it if it was the wrong choice.

I then aquired a DBX 160A and was pretty suprised at how useful it was.

I ended up selling that and got 2 DBX 160X's. Then, I went through a phase where I just tracked vox with no compression at all.

I recently bought a CL1B and track with that.

All that being said, I like tracking at lower ratios with opto or tube comps so that ITB I compliment it with a FET or VCA emu with a high ratio, fast attack/release so get a more aggressive sound. Alot of the music I do is dense rap so I usually need at some point to use an 1176 for it's high/mid push.

So now it looks like CL1B to ITB: Duende Channelstrip > BF76 or T-Racks Black 76 > vox buss with RVox on it.

On less busy mixes, either sparse hip hop beats or r&b I will use more transparent compression 'cause the vocals have more room.

When tracking lead and bk vox, I'm using the FMR PBC-6A with slow knee but just barely lighting up the first -3db light. Then on the lead vox channel I'm using a hpf and then the Compassion compressor(vocal preset) and adjust the threshold until it just starts to barely compress.
This goes to the lead vox buss with all other lead parts (accents, stacks etc) hitting a -4db gain plug, the CLA 1176 black (vox preset) and the CLA-2A (default setting).....each just barely compressing. An additional Equality at the end for final eq-ing.

Backgrounds go to a separate buss set like the lead buss. The Compassion and PBC really make the difference but I could probably use either/or and get the same result. It sounds very in your face, but natural and no "s" problems.

The Compassion, 1176, LA2a seems to work well together, each bringing a different thing to the party.

CLA2A lately...if not that it's between the BF1176 and the Waves1176. Sorta depends on where I'm trying to go with it..

Waves CLA76 or Softube CL1B a lot of the times. Waves Ren Vox most of the times.

Haven't tried the rocket on vox yet, but it sure is a cool compressor. I actually find myself using the free Antress Modern LA2A (Lost Angel) a lot for vox lately. Pretty good sounding compressor, but GREAT when you see the price (free).

I tried a few comp over last years, but I always come back to waves renComp. More less very easy to use and I can make it always fit in.

I found e.g. isotopes alloy or lost of other waves compressors much more uncomfortable to use, so I only use them if I need that particular flavour.

Normally I first grep the RenComp, if I feel that track needs something more specialised then I go to H-Comp, V-comp, ssl, API or IZotope (while I do not really like the Izotope comps (only in very few cases a good match), but I do like their EQ very much)

I never though the C1 was really useful, but maybe I really never got to get to now it.

Native comps in Cubase or Logic are ok, but never great imho.

I tried some IK trex stuff, but i did impress overly, is ok though.

I demoed other brands, but for me it comes down to that waves overall has the best work horses in dynamics and eq. (sonnox would be my second choice, but i spent money for waves and won't do it twice).

cheers

I have the Antress plug you're talking about, but for some reason I love the way my vocals sound thru the Rocket Comp. I tend to use that on myself more than anything else. Also, the Presonus Studio One Tri-Comp sounds pretty good imo. Those might be my top 3.

I am wondering how many people here using the Waves CLA76 have tried the UAD 1176. Ive tried both. Stuck with UAD.

The UAD has a much faster attack, which is good for catching nasty transients and has a more aggressive sound (especially when going for an ultrafast release), while the CLA-76 sounds smoother (or more boring, to use a different word). The IK 76 is somewhere inbetween the two. The CLA-76 bluey can produce some major distortion that people might like, though.
If I had to do a rating: 1) UAD 1176LN, 2) IK-76, 3) CLA-76, 4) BF76

I believe if one has a feature rich compressor & knows it inside out, then no other compressor will be required, IMHO.

I'm surprised to see that no one is using the McDSP 6030 Ultimate Comp. I'm really digging it right now. It has something for every situation. I know it'll add that something extra to most if not everyone's tool box.

Maybe I should just keep it to myself (and whoever else is actually using it)! Its becoming a roullet bullet...

Stillwell rocket for me. Sometimes followed by the major tom or logics compressor in opto mode, or I patch in my la 4's if I need a more up front sound.

When funds permit I want to add the cla compressors to the arsenal.

I really like the CLA-76 (black more than blue for whatever reason), but I like the CLA-2A more. The CLA-3A is really nice for me, as well.

But more than any of those, I still really, really like the Waves Puigchild. It just works really well for me, almost all the time. I've been using the CLA-2A more and more, though, and really digging it. It really reminds me of a hardware LA-2A I used to use all the time.

The Glue is also a winner, as is the Abbey Road RS124 from time to time.

I also use the VCC at the top of the chain, but I don't push it very hard. And I've used the Waves Kramer MPX a couple times directly on vox and had good results. It has a lift in the 4k-6k region on male vocals that is very smooth to me. EDIT: This is when in 15ips mode.

UAD LA2A, probably 90% of the time. Nothing else comes close, especially when followed by the Neve 1073 EQ.

I mean I understand that the sound changes across the range of changing parameters, but could you be a little more specific about what turns you off so much? A character of distortion, or what you perceive as pumping, or...

I know what you mean that changing controls has 'unintended' consequences but I'm sort of interested to hear another user describe those things in their own words...I sometimes don't know if I'm 'hearing' what I'm hearing.

Another interesting question is how do people use their favorite compressors? Not all will cope with demanding tasks.

Waves CLA-76,
CLA-2A,
The Glue
MPX Master Tape
Ren Vox
H-Comp

Usually record through Neve 1073 and an ADL 1000...... then in PT - mostly the Waves RComp. Like the Soft Tube, several of the 1176 plugs, the CLA2A and there's a new Maserati Comp that's 'interesting' tonally !!

The Softube CL1B is mentioned a lot and I've been interested in this plug-in since it appeared on the Powercore platform. However the (relatively) high price always held me back. Now with the (rare) sale it's 30% off, but still $393 (incl. VAT).

Off course it's been over 4 years the virtual CL1B was introduced and we've seen a lot of new and cheaper character plug-ins since...

cant wait for all this **** to turn 64 bit and the good plugs to be recoded from the ground up and for a total overhaul of all our favorites and further refinement of code and CPU usage efficiency. that's going to be so great sounding.

Sorry, but I completely fail to understand how 64-bit code is going to make anything actually sound any better.
AFAIK there are no advantages sonically whatsoever to using 64-bit code. The mixes will sound identical to those done in 32-bit. The sole advantage for audio in 64-bit is in memory usage, and that's all.
