Saving Mixes in Pro Tools 9

Question:

If I "save as" a mix of a song in pro tools will it build a whole new folder with a new copies of my audio files are will it just save mix and plugin settings and any new audio files?

Basically I would like to recall different mixes of a certain song and compare them without making whole new files of my projects and wasting hard drive space.

Save as doesn't copy audio files. Save copy can do.

Save as will do what you want. Just remember that once you do it you will be in that new session, so either name it so you'l know or go back to the original session. It won't copy all the audio, just the session file.

Save as… will do exactly what you want. Just make sure you don't "delete" any audio files from an earlier mix or they'll be gone when you try to open it. You can still clear them out of the session. But if Pro Tools asks if you want to delete them from your drive, say "no".

If you did want a whole new folder you could hit "Save as Copy…" to do what you described. But, as you said, that would double your hard drive space.

Keep in mind, you could also import specific parameters from tracks from earlier mixes. For instance, if you like the way the vocal was automated on Mix #2 but you're using Mix #3 right now, just import that specific automation on top of your vocal track. It's quicker than closing Mix #3 and re-opening Mix #2.

Good luck.
