Building a music desktop or buy?

I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 1525, 2 GB about 1.66 (maybe a little more, but def under 2 Ghz) or processing power. Internal HDD about 250Gb and External 500Gb. Vista 32 bit.

I've been using reason for last 2 years no problem. Now I'm gettn into VSTs. I have Ableton 8 Suite and Reaper as DAW and just installed Komplete 7. I've noticed so far there will be some issues when I get deep into songs and adding multiple instruments/effects etc.

What system would you recommend I look into for a stand alone system, preferably desktop but not opposed to laptop. Also I'm looking at PC, Wwindows, but not opposed to mac. I was thinking of just building a system but haven't looked into what specs I should aim for. This is my starting point. Your opinions are of value.

The system will be only for music production, with optional recording from time to time. Thanks in advance.
