Firewire connection causes low frequency sound

Hi all, I have what is probably a common problem. When everything is connected up, I get a nasty low frequency hum coming out of the audio outs of my FS1R, NOT the headphone jack. This disappears if I disconnect the firewire connection from my FA101 to the laptop or disconnect the laptop power supply so it is running battery. If the FS1R is connected but not turned on, the hum persists. It also goes away when I physically disconnect the power cable to the FS1R.

I imagine this is something to do with a groundloop but how do I solve it?

Thanks,
dnq

Yep, definitely a ground loop happening. The easy fix is to put a ground-lift adapter on the AC plug of the PSU for your laptop and call it a day.
