Coreaudio overrun problems

I'm using a Metric Halo rig with a ULN-8, 2882 and an RME Octamic connected via AES. I get occasional sets where the recording has sections that skip ahead (ie. the files are continuous but there is audio missing across all tracks) and when looking at the recording logs, it says that "CoreAudio Overran disk." Sometimes it's perfect and sometimes there are a lot of these.

I'm using a MBP i5 2.53 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM and OS X.6.5.

Metric Halo has chimed in with disabling Spotlight, but that doesn't seem to help.

My drives are bus powered 2.5" 7200 Seagates or 5400 Hitachis connected via USB or firewire.

What's weird is that sometimes there are no problems whatsoever. I've done 34 tracks with no problems to the same drives, so I don't think I'm running out of bus bandwidth.

Any ideas?
