2011 -> Buying new desktop -> What is a smart buy ?

Damn you techology!!

I am very computer savy... but lay low 6 or more months and you're out of the loop entirely. Well, not entirely, but I'd appreciate some input

Not talking about USB3 vs Lightpeak...

Need a new DAW, thought of building a "top of the line" 32bit system to GRADUALY max out and squeeze a couple years fully integrated. 64bit... I still fear it for the horror stories... should I?

Finishing my studio, so yes I am on a budget right now. I want a desktop with a good processor and expandability for future UAD cards

Please advise me on worthwhile investment in motherboard mainly... and feel free to discuss i7 or Quad-core... What is tried and tested? What is being phased out? What is the next big thing and when is it coming ? Like wait 2 months for roadmap processors to arrive and price drops? Should I wait a bit longer (I have a meager core 2 duo)

Thanks!

From personal experience, being a happy W7 64-bit on an i7 user...

Yes, get an i7 machine.

Yes, take the plunge into 64-bit Windows.

It will give you a lot of music production power with access to more memory and better effects and plugin processing. A lot of new plugins are now programmed 64-bit from the ground up, and your 32-bit plugins will still work fine in a 64-bit DAW, on a 64-bit operating system.

I would say W7 is finally a Windows version that can be actually trusted for stable audio production. (Well, of course there are still many of us XP holdouts who have at least one active machine with XP running on it in the house... Just to be safe...)
