is it a good time to buy a new mac pro?

is it a good time to buy a new mac pro?
Because my budget is around 2800€.

So the only machine I could get right now is the quad.
I saw some benchmarks wich showed that the new quads outperform the older eightcores....

And I want to go for 8-16gb of ram to get the maximum out of osx and logic.

Any tips?

Here for the gear

I say go for it if it's in your budget. My buddy just got one to upgrade his set-up a bit. All techy reasons aside, it's just a smart investment simply because of the machine's ease of expandability. It's always a good time to buy a mac pro.

so the buyers guid said its "neutral" because the last release was mid 2010.

So my other question is:
Is the quadcore realy enough to be set for the next 3 years. (my macbook pro does a good job and is 3,5years old)
But with my session become bigger and bigger.
Slates plugins are killing my good old 2,4ghz dualcore.
Logic beeing 64bit (and I have the feeling it will be only 64bit with logic 10)
I realy want a machine that I dont have to care about the next 3 years.

Would be the update to a 3,2ghz quad realy worth the extra money?
How much ram should I buy?

cheers and thanks for the input

So guys I think I´ll order this baby in the first week of january:

Mac pro quad with 3,2ghz
16gb of ram
2x1tb hdd

what do you say?
Is this a machine that will serve me well in the next 3-4years?
(thats the time my 2007mbp has on its shoulders)

mac pros are really not a good deal lately.

My early 2009 dual quad has a higher benchmark than my new 2010 Quad core with the same CPU speed. The new one also was about 600 more than the old one when I bought it. If you can, look out for the late 2008 and early 2009 models. If money is no option, then just go ahead. But the mac pros are really the worst bang for your buck at the moment. The 12 cores also sort of defeat the purpose on that logic will not use all the cores due to several issues from using aux channels to having too many FX on a single channel.

The only thing worth the price right now is the Imac 27 inch but again , no hardrive space. Bad time to buy a mac if you ask me.

What benchmark are you refering to?

The one I found showed that the new quads are faster then the mid09 eight-cores...

And an imac is no option because of the HD limitations and some other stuff.

And I believe the i7 in the imac isnt near as fast as the cpu in an mac pro.
The screen on the other hand is surely worth 1k, so I understand your saying, that the imac is the bigger win for the money
