Understanding Logic's panning, signal flow per channel

Still not fully understanding the following:

If I have a mono channel, and I run it through an insert that does some sort of stereo effect like a stereoized chorus, ping-pong delay or whater, is the output of that channel now stereo going to the stereo buss?

If I then run it through another effect, and that effect is stereo, are my L and R channels remaining discrete?

If I then run it through a mono insert, is it summing those signals?

If I have a stereo track, but run it through a mono effect insert, am I summing the signal and losing the stereo?

Do I really have to use Direction mixer just to do a basic pan of any stereo signal? Is there any benefit of using it for mono signals?

thx

sorry, i know this sounds like a stupid question, but I think my not having a clear picture of channel signal flow is causing me confusion in other areas which will clear up once I get how the routing works.

whenever i throw a mono->stereo type plug-in on a mono track in logic(8) it automatically makes that track stereo.
