Need help - Can I upgrade this processor?

Hi everyone.
I have a tech question for you. I have a PC DAW that is getting a little tired & old, but due to a recent hospital stay, I will have to put off buying a new machine for quite awhile.

So my question is, can I simply buy/install a faster processor and increase my speed to get more life out of my machine for now.
If not, what about overclocking? worth it?

Any suggestions are welcome.
I know very little about hardware & building. I'm a plugn'play guy.

Here is what I have now... (don't Laugh )
  • MSI K8N Neo4 Motherboard, socket 939
  • AMD Athalon 64 Processor @ 2.21 ghz
  • 3gigs of ram

Here is my software[LIST][*]XP Pro[*]Cubase 4, [*]Soundforge 9[LIST]

I really appreciate any help. I wish I could just buy a new machine, but it will have to wait.

Thanks,
The Generator

The X2 4800 would be the fastest you could get your hands on fairly easily off ebay. 2 cores at 2.4GHz. Either that or a 4400 which has a clock speed of 2.2GHZ.

The only problem you might have is that XP might not see the extra core, in which case you can follow these instructions instead of reinstalling Windows....

Switching to AMD Dual Core CPU without re-installing Windows
