Safest and most compatible Win OS currently

Configuring a PC based around Ableton Live and Presonus Studio One and RME Multiface (older version).

Should i just stick to XP ? What r the benefits of a 64bit OS ?
Also are 32bit plug-ins compatible with a 64 bit OS ?
Does that question even make sense ?

New to PC land. :(
Help.

A 64 bit operating system will let you use more memory. That's the main advantage. You can still use 32 bit plugs with a 64 bit system. It's when you use a 64 bit DAW that you have to use 64 bit plugs.
