Noise level of new imacs (fall 2009)?

Hi all,
How about using one of the new imacs (21 or 27'') for vocal recording and ocassional mixing in the same room? Are they quiet enough? I don't care if they're not dead silent, the imac will be about 3 or 4 meters away from the mic. Is it reasonable or will the fan go off at high level at higher CPU loads?
Thank You!!

Haven't seen the new ones in the flesh here down-under yet!

But I'd guess the aluminium frame would cut down a lot on the noise no?

The i5 and i7 represent a new, more powerful direction for the iMacs.

Since those are the ones us Gearslutz seem to be ogling the most for recording, if anyone gets one of these bad boys (I know, they're not quite delivering them yet, but when they do), if you could post a noise report, mucho appreciation.

And potentially frazzle the GPU/CPU/overheat the hard drive?

I would defenitely not fool around with those fan controls too much. Macbooks and iMacs are tightly spaced computers and they're getting rather warm. I wouldn't trust anything overwriting the default fan settings. But each to their own I guess.

SMCfancontrol only allows you to set/raise the minimum fan-speed, not the maximum.

We just picked up a new 27" iMac this weekend. Definitely quiet enough for the recording environment. It does get warm on top tho, so please don't mess with the fan tutt

Thanks for the opinions and this last first-hand experience. I'm gonna get the 21,5", but I'll never mess with the fan!
