Connecting PCs / DAWs

Hey folks!

I would like to connect some computers to use one as master and the rest as slave - fx - processors. I.e.: One PC is used as a drumsampler only and get´s routed to the master-DAW with all it´s 17 sampler-outs. I tried FXTeleport but got a latency of 38 ms! Impossible to work with.

Is there any cheap alternative? Or do I really have to get some ADAT-Interfaces to get the job done?

Hope you know what I mean and thank you in advance...

Hi,
the least expensive is FX teleoprt especially with multiple computers
no audio card needed

What audio interface are you using on your master DAW? I did a similar thing with a Pro Tools LE/002R and another PC loaded with an RME (I guess it was a 96 I/O) hooked up via ADAT and MTC; worked fine and I could use some realtime effects like convolution reverbs or virtual synths coming back to Pro Tools via ADAT in Aux tracks. I guess your best solution is get hold of an used RME (or similar) card with ADAT on ebay and use that.

Hope this helps

many people are using FX teleport as low as 6ms, some even less.

i know of several orchestraters with 4-6 connected and having no issues.

gigalan works best

Gigabit Ethernet... As opposed to 100 MBit connections, which are still standard on most PCs. Gigabit means 1000 Mbit/s.

HI,
if you are getting that high a latency i would say the computer(s) are under powered.
again many people using it at low latency.

truthfully FX teleport can be a pain.
notice i said the "cheapest way"

the best way (most expensive) is with audio interfaces in each computer and midi to each.

however this requires a host program for each as well.

Scott - I think this is going to be my "winter project." I've been reading the forums at the FX Teleport site, and it seems that if you use either firewire or 1g ethernet it works well. I've got 2 3-yr-old PCs that I want to set up as slaves, one for VSTis and the other for effects/processing.

I've been tempted to use FXteleport, as well.
My DAW pc is PD dual core,3.2ghz, 2gb ram, 100m/bit LAN

and, the 2nd is a gateway, usually mutil-use pc (some audio, games, internet) that I am tempted to convert to a dedicated sampler/vst instrument kinda thing.
Both run XP Pro.

It's a P4 3.2ghz, 2GB RAM, but with only the 100m/bit LAN, as well
Going on 2 years old.
Though, I have an EMU 0404 in it with optical and spdif out..probably a better way, but the LAN part interests me due to wanting one in a separate room, if possible.

Will it work?
Dont wanna thread hijack, but didnt wanna post similar thread, either.
Thanks

on a side note, the gateway does have a PCIe video card.
I've heard sometimes higher powered vid cards can rob some bandwidth..

cheapest way? Use REAPER w/ ReaMote (included with REAPER) on each computer. http://www.reaper.fm .. $40-$200 is pretty damn cheap..

I guess the cheapest way is to treat the extra box(es) as dumb sound modules (just like rack synths) and run their audio output through a mixer to the main computer. Just feed the extra boxes midi. A soundblaster clone card is 5 bucks, use Project KX drivers with it (free on the web) instead of Soundblaster drivers. the midi cable interface for those cards are another $10. With the mixer you can tweak the sound (EQ) or use outboard on it. Some composers use banks of cheap computers this way to orchestrate. My local Fry's electronics store just ran a combo deal on an AMD Sempron 3100 with Nforce 3 motherboard for $60 so there are deals out there. You can see where I'm going here . . . you can frankenstein a box or multiple boxes on the cheap and with a mixer bring them back into the main box just as you would a mic or synth. A real mixer will give you alot of other flexible options too.
