MOTU 24i and unbalanced audio

I'm using a MOTU 1224 and MOTU 24i to do recording. It seems that the motu gets a pretty hot signal compared to the mixer. This could be due to one of two things:

#1: The inserts that go to the MOTU are pre low cut and eq, etc...and the -20db light ISNT.
#2: The inserts are unbalanced and the MOTU inputs are +4db balanced.

I'm trying to find out for myself on google if this is a problem, but I can't find anything. Is there anything I should know about unbalanced signals going into the balanced MOTU? Will the signal levels not be what I expect?

So +4db is 1.23v unbalanced and +.615 / -.615 is balanced. So if the difference between -.615 and +.615 is 1.23v, then shorting Signal - to ground and supplying 1.23v to Signal + would be the same as supplying .615v differential to both? Or does my 4db 1.23v signal into the "Signal +" equal a 10db input level?
