Question re: Logic and Pro Tools

Greetings all...

Question: Am seriously considering upgrading my rig to a Mix system (am currently on LE / 001) and I am also thinking of using Logic as a front end for this purpose.

Who out there is doing this, and are you liking the performance? Can one truly use VST and TDM plug ins in the same environment with the TDM bridge software?

Thanks in advance

I should probably preface this by saying I really like the mixing, editing, and automation of Pro Tools....

But I need the advanced MIDI functions of Logic, and I want to run VST's alongside.

Also, can Logic address both ASIO hardware and TDM hardware at the same time?

Thanks again.

Good question!

Access to VST plug ins is relativly new for PT.

There is a thread on "ugly VST" in this section try to find that - it addresses the issue somewhat..

Hey Jules...

Yeah, I have used the "ugly VST" and although Leigh Marble should win a Nobel Prize for his work on this and the ReWire problem (via ReFuse), it is a bit unwieldly and awkward to get functioning.

Logic just seems so frickin cool....I have this vision of how I *want* it to function.....but would love to hear from people actually using it so I can see if reality matches my personal fantasy.

PS...Loved the little writeup on your studio the other month....very cool.

Logic as a front end to PT hardware works great. Logic CAN access ASIO and DAE hardware at the same time. If you have an ADAT bridge or some way to get lightpipe into your PT hardware, you can use that as a physical connection between the ASIO and DAE instead of the ESB system bridge which is software only and 8 channels in one direction. I currenly run two engines under Logic, and I get over 96 channels with VST and all other native goodies on ASIO and 64 tracks with TDM plugins and routing under DAE. All plugins and parameters TDM and VST are easily automated under Logic, and having LogicControl brings it all together as one single super powerful system... Now when are those 1.5GHz Macs coming out!!! heh

My Macspert says the PCI bus might get a little overloaded, and doubts if a Mix x 3 (cubed) could hack it.. So! How many TDM cards ARE you running in your rig?

Full marks for getting it all working!!!!

Ahhh....I see....

Well Jules you bring up a good point and another question.....

I currently have two Creamware cards (a Pulsar II and a Scope SRB). The latency is terrific under ASIO....and my thought use them in the Logic mixer for synths and effects alongside a TDM Mix card, which would handle the disk I/O and TDM effects....leaving my CPU resources free for VSTi's and VST effects.

I currently run the rig with no hiccups under ProTools LE (routed via Lightpipe from the Pulsar Card to the 001). No PCI overflows...and it really is rock stable

I want to be able to do the same thing...but with expanded track count and system speed that TDM would allow....and the MIDI functions / VST effects from Logic.

In short....I want to be Uber Geek.

I know this is probably a long shot...but is ANYBODY doing this?
