Help building new DAW.. Audio Interfaces

Hi Scott, sounds like I'm just getting sidetracked by irrelevant variables!

I only have 2 pci slots on this mobo.
In slot 1, the uad card is given the same irq as the 'dual channel PCI IDE' controller, which I assume controls the sata drive (am not running ahci, as recommended), and if I put it in slot 2, it's allocated the same irq as the onboard firewire controller, that my interface is attached to.

I'm getting the same problem in either slot (card drops out with an err.21 message, plus simulataneous loss of audio engine).

For some reason, in device manager, all the 'use automatic settings' check boxes are greyed out, except for the floppy drive controller, which means I can't manually change an irq value.

This is the case whether I choose for the bios or my PnP OS (XP Pro sp2) to allocate resources.

Maybe I'm being a ****** and am missing something obvious (likely), but if not being able to manually change an irq is a limitation of this motherboard (Asus M2R32-MVP) then I guess I'm a bit screwed.

As for the Ati driver thing, I read that many different drivers are included with the latest versions of the Catalyst Control Centre software, incl. HD audio drivers and so forth - got that info here

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us

seeing as AMD own Ati and my mobo has an Ati chipset this didn't sound too unreasonable, and there are many drivers included with the package but this doesn't seem to help me in any way at all in any case.

Now I'm just plain stumped as to how to sort this irq thing out.

Edit: apologies for the hijack...

yeah he's great!

In my area he's know as the 'DAW Bully'
that's why we use Sonica. At least Guy
is personable and actually knows what he's
talking about.

Ahh i see Allen is up to his usual..
(i have him on ignore)

nothing positive or constructive to add to the thread allen?
as usual...

Allen calls me a daw bully because i have to harsh with some of these people who post extremely incorrect, uneducated and lacking of experiance, BAD advice to people..
such as many of his posts.
so rather than let people be steered incorrectly i have to set the record straight..

not too unlike this thread...

am i blunt, to the point yes
a bully? LOL how funny...

Guy at Sonica? well we aregree there! Sonica is one of the few DAW builders i have respect for... Him and Jim at Studio Cat. and of course Vin (Tafkat) but he is in Aussie land..

So did you actually build this machine, and was the Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6, X48 s775 any good?
I'm asking because I have some mobo trouble at the moment and will possibly switch to a new one pretty soon?

Kind regards,
Mads

I do not post much. I read often. I found myself getting irrated reading this post. I think trashing Scott is completely uncalled for. I've never spoken to the man, never purchased anything from him either.

What I have seen over the last few years is his valuable advise. I have not built a DAW in three years. I've built three total. I read his posts and find they keep me somewhat up to date on what is happening with DAW hardware, and if I needed a new DAW, the info I have picked up would greatly help with the next build. How is that trolling? In fact in my case it may result in my never purchasing from him or any others. I see a guy that is indeed running a business, but gives back knowledge to the community knowing there is a fair amount of folks that will just use his research collateral for their own benefit. I am glad he is here and so giving of his knowledge on the board.

Although I trust I can handle my next build, (whenever that is) perhaps I'll go to him because he has earned it!

Too much noise here folks!

scott at ADK

I have been looking over these posts bashing scott, and have to disagree...

I purchased my RME Multiface II from him, and his company has given me AWESOME tech support , and even helped me through computer issues on my custom built DAW that I did not even buy from them!!..Even to the point of offering to take my PC, and fix it..(albeit for a normal service charge)...

he is no bully in my book...

just my 2 cents...

(and no, I don't sell anything)

If you come and give free advice you´ll probably get bashed...
That´s how internet work!

ahh, I don't mind flames, people need to have thicker skin on the internet, and don't worry about what other people being too blunt or even insulting, it's gonna happen, makes for more entertainment anyway.

I don't see why Scott just doesn't come back and defend his posts, or if he is wrong admit that he made an error, and this would probably relax allen a bit...

I don't know who's right or who's wrong, but debate can be good.

The fact that he hasn't posted a rebuttal is a bit strange.

I will say, bashing him for his sig is uncalled for.

If you believe he's giving wrong information, and you want to correct it...I think if you're here to help than that's what you're obligated to do, am i right ?!

But there's nothing wrong with trying to sell your products while you give advice, could be a conflict of interest but if people give wrong information hopefully they will be corrected or someone will challenge their assumption and we will see a nice debate.

So, nothing wrong with a little debating even if it is heated...but I also see nothing wrong with plugging your website.

Hi All!

I'm in the state of building a new machine at the moment and I was considering following options:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6, P35
Intel Q6600
4x 1GB RAM (Kingston according to support list)

I'm running Sonar 7 and 1 UAD1e and RME 9632 Hammerfall (not HDPC) and I want to upgrade to a RAYDat in nearer future.

My current machine is a msi k8neo4 (PCB V1) with Athlon 64X2 2x2GHz and glitchtes and overall performance is just AWFUL! So what I'm mostly looking for is stability...

HD's, PS, GraKa will be similar to above - will I get there (stabilitywise)?
regards

andi

P.S.: I want to use the internal raid1 for mirroring my audiodata... good or bad idea?

re jcs.
it really upsets me when people put down or flame others.
highly upsetting in fact.
what is it about the net that makes this occur ?

c'mon chaps. we are all human beings. "do unto others,,," etc.
my granny used to say.
imho people such as scott and sonica and many others
fulfill a need in the market place.

for all people know scott prolly has a family , and children to raise like
everyone else. and he is prolly , like everyone else, just trying to
make a living to look after his kids like everyone else.

i'm sure as i'm a tekkie myself , if i met scott down the pub...
we would prolly argue bout all sortsa tekkie subjects.
COS THATS WHAT TEKKIES DO.
but it would be done in a very friendly way.
getting drunk in the process prolly..lol.
it would be done with great respect n camraderie n friendship.
n i'm sure we would have a good time.

ive worked on systems projects in the past with many talented tek folks.
we might argue like cats n dogs at work, but always in
a respectfull friendly way.

so PLEASE , show others some kindness.
cos it makes a screwed up world a far better place.

i have absolutely zilch to do with scotts business n never met him.
but i DO respect him. so..obviously do others from what i see of the client list on his site.

just asking for some kindness round here..PLEASE !!

just my 2cents.
ps..when building a system dont chintz on the power supply.
ive seen people put all their buks into the processor, then
buy some poor supply, and then after a year when they add more peripherals or hardware,
sometimes get problems. in summary...plan for future additions to the core system supply wise.

I too have been thinking of upgrading my DAW but I've been tempted to go with a smaller form Micro ATX case from Thermaltake that is just large enough to still fit a decent video card. I found a good looking Gigabyte MicroATX mb that seems to have everything I need.
Anybody have any experience or advice with using a MicroATX setup for a DAW?
Also wondering if pretty much all the Q6600 chipsets out there are now G0 stepping.....read some posts about it being a bit of a gamble when ordering one as far as whether you get the newer or older stepping. I imagine by now most q6600 quad chipsets would be G0 but just wanted to make sure.
