Just built this baby to handle some serious plugs. My goal was to build a PC with the elegance of a mac which is why I opted for a few aesthetic enhancements. I wanted a case and keyboard that I liked as much as the mac pro cases and keyboards so I went with a Lian Li case and Enermax keyboard.

Intel 975XBX2 Motherboard
Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz (considering light overclocking if extra power becomes needed)
2 GB Patriot 800 Mhz DDR2 Ram
Chaintech GSV73GS-G2 GeForce 7300GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 Video Card
Western Digital 16 MB cache 160 GB startup drive
Maxtor 320 GB audio drive
simple LG DVDROM and R/W drives
Lian Li PC-61Case
Enermax brushed aluminum keyboard

(Running Pro Tools LE 7.1 w/digi 002r interface)

Just finished building my new composing box for my home studio:

It's a PC

Motherboard: Asus M2NPV-VM
RAM: 2x1GB Kingston DDR2 800MHz
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
Harddrive(s): 2x 320GB Seagate SATA in RAID 0
GPU (graphics-card): NVIDIA GeForce 6150 rev. A2 (Integrated)
Tower: Antec Sonata

Interface: M-audio Ozonic firewire
Sequencer: Cubase SX3

Everything is fine. The integrated graphics has a DVI & VGA output for 2 monitors and if I want to get crazy, I can add another graphics card and get 4 monitors running.

This whole update cost me 480€

I used the Tower, PSU, DVD-RW, keyboard, mouse & monitor from my old setup, but damn how dirt cheap can get you far nowadays. I opened some old mixes I couldn't finish because the old cpu went up to 100% an now the new one goes to ~15%.. It's crazy... I really recommend this setup if all you do is need a machine for home use.

I think I'm going to pick up a 22" or 24" wide monitor tomorrow, I need more screen real-estate... Only have a 19" now.

You can see in my footer what I have at the main studio...

I really wish that Digi would test out some of the new MOBO's from Asus that i am seeing on their website and let us all know what one they reccomend. Granted I may be looking in the wrong place, but it seems like a lot of the part numbers that digi has in their support page are outdated and no longer out there to buy, not to mention we all want the latest greatest bigger better faster PC.

I finally updated after 3 years of happy service from a P4 3gig

the new self built box comprises:

Asus P5W DH mainboard
Intell Q6600 Quad core CPU
2 gig Hinix PC6400 800mhz memory
Asus 8900gt Silent (no fan) video card sending DVI to 2 by 22" acer panels
ANTEC Phantom 500 PSU (silent, no fan)
ANTEC P182 Case
1 Hatachi SATA2 500gig HD for apps and samples
1 WD Raptor 150gig 10000RPM HD for Audio
various external firewire and usb drives with yet more samples/sfx

running XP Pro with 4 separate boot partitions
1. Nuendo with Motu hardware HD192, 24io, pci424 (my main work partition)
2. Protools LE and 002R (for when I have to visit the dark side)
3. Vegas for editing video
4. a play partition where I can muck around, try things, screwup without affecting the actual work partitions.

I also have a separate HD sitting in the box that is unconnected, it contains another XP install that I have for freelance engineers, I physically swap the cables to this drive, so when someone else is using my computer they cant see or affect my stuff. tutt
