Protools Question software versions...

I'm a LE user (002r) but I'm getting a Mackie 24:8 with 24e at a great deal from a friend complete with desk. My thinking is to record into Protools just like I do now with my 1604 and send it back out to the console for mixing and to make use of the aux's for headphones mixes. Anyway I'm looking to dump my 002 and one option I thought about was going with a Mix 24 system . I know allot of people hate the 888/24's and recommend the apogee ADDA that most mix systems upgraded to. I'm not to concerned with downgrading software since I am using a powerbook at 10.3.9 and using 6.9. I have read the "what's new" docs in the digi support area but I am curious for those of you who used protools around the time of 6.4 ( I started at 6.7) what you liked about 6.7 or 6.9 for that matter compared to 6.4. Now, I know TDM may vary a little bit from LE but so far the only thing I noticed was in 6.7 you could add track colors. I'm not a hard core PT user meaning I don't get into all the things it has to offer as much as I maybe should, but I have been using it for about two years. I don't mix ITB too much mostly I use protools like tape and also for editing. The only plugins I use ITB are Waves IR, delays, and some noise removal plugins. Everything else is OTB for the most part.

I'm not one to care to have the latest and greatest, I just want to get out of LE and it's hardware (yes I looked into BLA) and track limitations. I can't bring myself to pay 500.00 for an extra 16 tracks and besides I'd like to send all tracks out to the console which is impossible with LE.

I wouldn't mind switching DAW's for DP5 or Tracktion and get a lightbridge so I can pick and choose my 8 channel pre's but that also limits to sending 32 tracks out. At least with MIX, I could get 8-16 good ADDA and get some 888's which from what I gather are not bad on the DA side just the AD side.

Any thoughts? Sorry I know half of this is hardware related somewhat.

I don't remember everything being that different between 6.9 and 6.4, I think 6.9 had better Icon support and an improved plugin organization, but can't think of anything drastic (might be wrong though )

I started out on a 002 but now use a 24 \ mix system, I use the cheaper 882's rather than 888's and find the AD and DA conversion fine, a lot of pros made great records on them. And I think PT6.4 is great, which is just as well cos there won't be any more updates for PT24 \ Mix owners from Digidesign.

Bear in mind as well that you can't use the cards in newer Mac's, the G4 is the fastest Mac that has the older PCI slots and some newer PC's don't support the older PCI cards either, although every PC I've tried so far has at least one PCI slot that would work.

A D24 and a DSP farm card is entry level, you need both cards and the internal TDM cable connecting them as well as at least one 882 or 888 interface. Check revision number on DSP Farm card as early ones won't run in a G4 or PC ... cards with revs later than QC will be ok.

A Mix core card will run on it's own with at least one interface
A Mix farm Farm card doubles the power of a Mix core system but you can't use it on it's own (even though it's the same card as a Mix Core it doesn's have the right number in it's EEPROM)
You can use a Mix Farm with a D24 though, that equals a Mix Core .

Mix Core and Mix Farm support the Y cables, so you can hang 4 interfaces from two cards to get the in and out quota you need ... 4 x 8 will give you 32.
They did make a cheap card that didn't have any DSP but gave you loads more ins and outs but can't remember what it was called, I've ever seen one for sale either.

Thanks, I am looking to go the Mix route. Every post I have seen in various forums against mix is because people cant upgrade to 7 or can't get clients to save sessions in the old format instead of the format that version 7 saves them as. I have seen quite a few on the DUC and Ebay for sale at good prices and now that intel macs are out the prices of G4 MDD dual 1.42's is insanely low now!

I wouldn't bother with a mix system when a UAD card is about twice the power of a mix card!

if you want the dsp get a UAD (or liquidmix/powercore)

if you need more I/O why don't you get a high quality Adat interface into your 002?
