Firewire drive too slow?

I have a cheap 160 gig firewire drive that I use to bring files to and from the studio where we do our tracking. When I am trying to transfer the files from the FW drive to my internal HD my firewire bus freaks out causing my interface to reboot. This happens also when I open files in reaper or nuendo and try to run them from the FW drive. Is my firewire drive too slow? I know that my friends glyph gives him no such problems, but he is also running a mac.

thanks.

just a guess:
do you have a fw i/o on the same fw bus?if you want to avoid fw logjams you need to have fw i/o on it's own bus, separate from the bus that fw drives are on.
i always have my i/o on it's own bus and fw drives on their own bus via a pci/fw card
