Bouncing down in PT LE

Hi folks,
For the longest time I've been bouncing down 24-bit mixes in ProTools LE for CD reference at 16bit/44.1 by putting a pwr-dither on the master bus.
I'm really, really unhappy with the result. What do you guys recommend for a simple pre-mastering CD ref to throw into my car stereo for test mixes or for friends to check out?

Also, I do all my CD burning in iTunes on my Mac G4. Is that also a bad idea for these ref CDs? What does iTunes do to my 16-bit .wav files if it's just set to burn and nothing else?

Thanks so much!
Jim B.

It really depends on what version of each you use! PT for a long time now has automatically put dither on bounces and export files - the latest version removes the invisible dither. See the release notes on Dig web site!

I do two things - depending. I record to an extra track in the same session, make regions for the tracks, and export region definitions and then burn it in Jam, which can do the dither on 24 bit files,
I bounce to disk with dither and import the tracks directly to Jam.

iTnes will work but I never use it for burning client or my pro work, just to get CDs form the iTunes music I have bought. People do, though.

So what version of PTLE, Mac or Windows, etc is always good to state in this kind of question.

In what way?

Record the mix to another track with no bus processing.

Export the region as an audio file.

Import that region to a new session and apply mastering processing - multiband dynamics, limiting, maximising etc;

Bounce that down with dither.

Should work just fine.
