PCI-e - real world better performance?

So we all know PCIe is a better format than standard PCI for audio but I'm just wondering if anyone here has actually been able to do more or get more consistent performance directly comparing a PCI to PCIe card (ie comparing PCI/PCIe RME HDSP 9632 cards or something like that) . It seems to me that you'd really only have a problem if you were trying to record a million tracks at once but even then can't you do 96 simultaneous tracks through one PCI MOTU 424 card?

I'm just wondering if the technology is ahead of our needs at this point in time or if it has actually broken down a boundary for someone. Or perhaps I'm missing something..

One would expect that the same card with the two different bus connectors would have the same performance--either it's going to work or it's not.

The real issue is the overall bus bandwidth (probably not an issue for audio work) and compatibility going forward.

It's going to be pretty tough to do any kind of realistic comparison, since PCIe machines are going to be a lot more powerful overall than PCI or PCI-X machines.

But PCIe is here, and the market is catching up to it, and it's where we're going to be for awhile.

PCIe offer NO improved performance.

bigger bandwidth ability but no lower latency.

Not too surprising, as the bus is essentially latency-free; it's the card and the software that make this happen.
