Best saturation ITB 2020 edition

My personal choices:

Fab Filter Saturn 2
AA Gold 3 Preamps or AA Taupe
Wavesfactory Spectre
Soundtoys Decapitator

Really curious to hear what everyone thinks on this one...

Give a listen to

Blackbox,
Elysia Karakter,
Unfiltered Audio Dent,
Elysia Phils Device
VSM3

^ All on plug in alliance.

Or Kazrog K-Clip.
d16 Decapitator
Kush UBK1
Kush Transfomers
Saturation on the Sly FI stuff
The Klanghelm one was decent.

Best is subjective, but Elysia Karakter is my favourite, bit trickier to use than most as it's hugely dependent on the amplitude of what's going in and it's dynamics and not in a subtle way. It just has the right tone I'm looking for, I doubt 99.99% could tell it was software. All the ones listed are exellent, and belive me, I've heard every single distortion out
there.

For cleaner saturation I use Dent, though I've only recently started using K-clip which might be better in some ways.

Klanghelm SDRR2 and I find myself reaching for Live's stock saturator quite a lot. It is quite effective if you chain it and rack it. You can make your own MB saturation like that. I don't use Saturn (1) or Trash 2 that much anymore but when I still did, I often preferred the sound of Trash, for what I was using it for. I've heard a lot of good about the Kush stuff but never tried it.

I have to say, I never really liked Saturn, it's defo a very cool concept but I didn't enjoy it. Trash is good, but it's a fair bit of fiddling, you can get unique results with it though.

I should suggest Unfiltered Audio Triad which is like Saturn on steroids, plus about 30 other top notch fx.

Saturn 2 - never liked v1, but v2 has some magic
Kush TWK - fantastic value and sound
Softube Tape - good value, easy and low cpu
Blue Cats Destructor - gently!

Never really liked Soundtoys. Triad is better than Saturn v1, but v2 is easy to use albeit not quite as crazy, and sounds better, too (using oversimplified and linear etc).

interesting several people recommend triad, i have it from a PA sale where i got it for 9 bucks or something, but always found the sound sterile. I guess I will give it another go!

Pfff, I find It difficult to describe sound. Just try It on vocals, acoustic guitar, percussive material. If you compare It to something like Decapitator, it is way more subtle (both cranked). I like it for vocals and in acoustic guitar when I want definition.

Kush Omega TWK
AA Celestial
AA Crimson
Newfangled/Eventide Saturate

I only demoed it, but D16 Devastator is killer for mangling/destruction (didn't try it for subtlety).

Not well known is Prime Studios Charleston:

There's the new (beta) Contortion-24 that looks very flexible:

For saturation try D16 Redoptor.

I use the preamp from lindell 80 series for saturation. Kush twk is very nice but it is a very strong flavor. Decapitator still holds its on (the tone knob is amazing). I have compared triad with saturn v1 for high end driving and saturn was much better (it may have been user error as triad is very fidly). Finally, i use tape saturation (IK tapes).

All of my most common tools are already posted. Here's an idea that is not mentioned, but worth the effort:

TDR Slick EQ - one band boosted and a second band cancelling out the first, so no EQ boost, but the saturation is engaged with the boost band.

Having control of this frequency-specific saturation is great, albeit not a new idea. The multiple saturation models allow for various flavors. It's basically an emphasis/de-emphasis idea all housed in one tool. I like that simplicity.

Hint: Not all models' bands that cancel one another perfectly. I like to stay with the American EQ option. The proportional EQ offers interesting curves when it comes to only saturation being added within those curves.

Thanks for the tip, it makes a lot of sense I'll try it later today.

I like subtle so I tend to use Psp 27's drive a bit of Saturn 2 and Unisum

I must be the only person who doesn't like the sound of Trash2, never felt right to me.

Current most used picks are:

Neve: Busses: Britson. Tracks: Lindell 80 track (drive only) or AO KONSOL if I want to push and clip.

SSL: PSP InfiniStrip Pre80s

API: Can't find anything I like. Any suggestions?

Tube: Cupwise C660 Passthrough (N4), Warmifier, Unisum (HYGGE circuit), Erin and VPRE-2C

Tape: IK Tapes and Airwindows Tape

Transformers: Omega TWK (plus if wanting to push/clip)

Subtle: DSP Reviver and True Iron

All rounder: Spectre, Aroma, HarmoniQ and Saturn 2.

Decapitator of course, and Radiator.

Lately I’ve been digging Kush Omega 458a — it’s a great “juice factor” tool. Not sure if that technically counts as saturation, though.

Also, I find the drive control on Klanghelm’s MJUC very useful. Subtle like the E27’s for the first half of the travel, but you can put some real hair on things when you go past noon, without ever getting into fuzzbox territory.
