Preamp coloring vs EQ

Hello all.

I debating between an Apollo x4 and Audient ID44. After a lot of reading and YouTube videos, the only aspect of the Apollo I’m wondering if I’d miss over the the ID44, is the unison preamps and their ability to emulate a multitude of others.

I have no experience with preamp sound coloring outside of 2 Focusrite interfaces I have used over the last few years.

Is the coloring effect of preamps attainable with EQ in the daw?

If this is the only feature I would choose the X4 over the ID44 for, should I just save the money and go with the ID44?

Thank you!

I wouldn’t worry about it as much. Also, preamp coloring can work against you if you have no experience. There are “preamp” plugins ITB like Slate/Waves or Kush audio. and a lot more.

If you're doing any guitar straight into Unison there's something special about how each amp model 'sees' the guitar signal.

If it's voice it's just for convenience, you save on DSP by recording with preamp/eq/comp on the way in, minimizing (possibly) the processing required in the next stage.

Yes, lots of great plugins out there.

It depends. Do you want to buy into UAD's ecosystem of plugins that can only be run on their Apollo/Satellite systems? Sure they sound great (i own the Twin Mk II Quad), but do you need Unison, or how many UA plugins do you think you'll use on a daily basis with the Apollo?
